Goldbar's Late Home Run Lifts Pioneers Past Tetons; MCC Moves to Final Day With Win Over LRSC

Game 1 - Pioneers 8... Williston State 7

Sydney Goldbar (2B - Missoula, MT) blasted a 2-run home run in the bottom of the 6th inning to lift the Pioneers to a high drama 8-7 come from behind win over Williston State to advance in the Region XIII Playoffs. This was the 2nd 1-run game the Pioneers had played in a 18 hour span. 

Williston State got on the board with a run in the top of the 1st inning by taking advantage of 2 Pioneer errors. The Pioneers were unphased by the early run and answered with 4 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. Malory Webb (1B - Idaho Falls, ID) walked and Emily Robins (CF - Rexburg, ID) tripled to score Webb and tie the game 1-1. Rylynn Krein (P - Fergus Falls, MN) walked and then the Pioneers flew out in to a double play as Robins tried to score but was thrown out at home. Krein moved to 3rd on the play and scored on a Goldbar single. Paityn Ralphs (1B - Ammon, ID) reached base on an error before Liz Cunningham (RF - Polson, MT) drive in 2 runs with a double. 

Williston cut the lead to 4-3 with 2 runs in the top of the 3rd. MCC went up 5-3 in the bottom of the 4th inning after  Brylee Lowell (LF - Columbus, MT) walk and steal of 2nd, and a sacrifice bunt from Addison Sanders (DP - Idaho Falls, ID) that moved Lowell to 3rd, Webb singled to drive in Lowell.T 

In the top of the 5th inning, the Tetons took advantage of a hit batsman to start the inning and then took the lead 6-5 after a double and 2 singles. The Pioneers tied the game in the bottom of the 5th inning as Cunningham singled with one out and Lowell walked. Sanders came up clutch with a RBI double to bring the game to 6-6 with one out and runners at 2nd and 3rd. The Pioneers were unable to muster up any further runs in the inning. 

Williston took a 7-6 lead in the top of the 6th inning on a steal of home. Goldbar's heroics were set up by Brooke Schaffer (3B - Missoula, MT) reaching base on a Teton error. The Tetons had runners on 1st and 2nd with 1 out in the 7th inning but could not produce a run. Freshmen Goldbar and Cunningham had 4 of the 8 Pioneer hits in the game and 5 of 8 RBI. 

Krein pitched 7 innings (9 H, 7 R, 6 ER, BB, 7 SO) to pick up the win. 

Inside the Box Score

  • MCC had 8 hits (HR, 3B, 2 2B) and WSC had 9 hits (2B). 
  • WSC had 4 errors and the Pioneers had 3. 
  • Each team had 2 stolen bases. 
  • Pioneer batters struck out twice and walked 5 times. 
  • Teton batters struck out 7 times, walked once, andhad 2 hit batsmen. 

 

Game 2 - Pioneers 8 ... Lake Region State College 2

Malory Webb went 4-4 (2B, 2 RBI, 2 R, BB) to lead the Pioneers to a 8-2 win over Lake Region State to move into Saturday's final day of the Region XIII Playoffs. MCC will play host Dakota County Technical College with the winner moving to the championship against Dawson CC. The winner of the first game will have to defeat Dawson twice to win the title. 

The Pioneers dropped 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning as Webb led the game off with a single and moved to 3rd when Emily Robins reached base on an error. Webb scored on a wild pitch and Robins scored on a fielder's choice. 

MCC got 2 more in the 2nd inning when Brylee Lowell led off with a single and scored on a double from Webb. Webb scored on a RBI double from Rylynn Krein

LRSC picked up a run in the top of the 4th and then another in the 6th inning to cut the lead to 4-2 and had the bases loaded with no outs but the Pioneers were able to get out of the jam. The momentum of getting out of the jam propelled the Pioneers to 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th. Brooke Schaffer walked to lead off the inning and Sydney Goldbar singled. Liz Cunningham singled to drive in Schaffer. Adrie Mortensen (C - Rexburg, ID) put the game out of reach with a 2 RBI double. Webb followed that with a RBI single and the Pioneers were on their way to Saturday action. 

Cunningham and Lowell each had 2 hits for MCC. 

Kayla Jensen (Lewistown, MT) was solid in the circle pitching 5 innings (6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, BB, SO) and Krein pitched the final 2 innings (BB, 4 SO).
