Clutch Hitting Saves the Day as Pioneers Win 2 in Williston

Game 1 - Pioneers 9... Williston State 7

The Pioneers used a 4-run 5th inning to take the lead for the 1st time in the game at 7-5 and then watched the Tetons tie the game up at 7-7 before dropping 2 more runs in the top of the 7th and held on for a 9-7 win Friday afternoon in Williston, ND. This 4-game series is big for the Pioneers as they are in a 3-way tie in the loss column for 2nd place and the opportunity to host the Region XIII Playoffs. 

Williston State picked up 4 runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning to take a 4-0 lead on the Pioneers. MCC answered back with 3 runs in the top of the 3rd inning after Addison Sanders (3B - Idaho Falls, ID) singled and moved to 2nd on a groundout. Sanders moved to 3rd on a passed ball and then scored on a RBI single from Khloey Robinson (LF - Belgrade, MT). Robinson moved to 2nd on a passed ball and subsequently stole 3rd. Arin Eaton (CF - Belgrade, MT) walked and pitcher Rylynn Krein drove them in with a 2 RBI triple to rightfield. 

Williston picked up another run for a 5-3 lead before the big 5th inning by the Pioneers. Adrie Mortensen (C - Rexburg, ID) led off the inning with a double and moved to 3rd on a errant Teton throw. Mortensen scored on a groundout by Robinsin. With 2 outs, Eaton walked and Krein hit a single. Brooke Richardson (1B - Helena, MT) then came thru in the clutch with a 3-run home run. 

Williston State had runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs in the 5th inning and pitcher Rian Ferriter was able to work her way out of the jam. Williston tied the game up at 7-7 with 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning. 

In the 7th inning, Malory Webb (SS - Idaho Falls, ID) walked and Eaton reached base on an error putting runners on the corners. Krein hit a RBI single and Richardson came up clutch again with a RBI single to give the Pioneers a 9-7 lead. Ferriter was able to set the Tetons down in order in the bottom of the 7th to give the Pioneers the win. Richardson finished the game 2-4 (HR, 4 RBI, R) and Krein was 3-4 (3B, 2 RBI, R). 

Krein started the game in the circle for MCC and pitched 3.1 innings (5 R, 2 ER, 7 H, BB, 5 SO) and Ferriter pitched the final 3.2 innings (2 R, 2 H, 3 BB, 2 SO).

Game 2 - Pioneers 6... Tetons 3

Pioneer hitters came up clutch in the 7th inning as the Pioneers scored 4 runs in the top of the 7th to rally from a 3-2 deficit to win 6-3 and take 2 games from the Williston State Tetons on Frieay and move in to a 2nd place tie with Dawson in the conference standings. 

Megan Brownson (C - Billings, MT) led the 7th inning off with a triple and Sierra Tuss (2B - Belgrade, MT) followed that with a RBI double. Brylee Lowell (RF - Columbus, MT) was hit by a pitch and MCC had runners on 1st and 2nd. Leadoff hitter Malory Webb lined out and Tuss was forced out at second for a double play. With the game tied at 3-3 with 2 outs, Arin Eaton singled and Lowell advanced to 3rd. Rylynn Krein then became the hero with a 3-run home run to rightfield. 

Williston scored the 1st run of the game in the bottom of the 1st inning and the Pioneers tied the game 1-1 in the top of the 2nd on Tuss's 1st RBI double of the game. MCC took the lead with a run in the 4th inning when Addison Sanders (3B - Idaho Falls, ID) doubled, moved to 3rd on a groundout and scored on a sacrifice RBI by Brownson. 

The Tetons tied the game with a run in the bottom of the 5th and took the lead with another run in the bottom of the 6th before the Pioneers 7th inning heroics. 

Rylie Schepp (Helena, MT) was strong in the circle for the Pioneers pitching 7 innings (3 R, 2 ER, 6 H, 2 BB, 4 SO) to pick up the win.

  • MCC had the only error of the game. 
  • Pioneer batters struck out 4 times and were hit by pitch once.
  • Teton batters struck out 4 times and walked twice.

The Pioneers moved to 12-4 in MonDak Conference play and are 24-12 overall. Williston is now 8-6 in league play and 17-17 overall. The teams will meet again Saturday for a doubleheader at Midrivers Field in Miles City, MT with 1st pitch coming at 12:00 PM MDT.
