Softball Earns Another Split With NDSCS on Sunday

Game 1 - Pioneers 8... NDSCS Wildcats 1

For the 2nd day in a row, the MCC Pioneers got a victory in game 1 over the NDSCS Wildcats. This game, however; did not need extra innings to decide. Rylynn Krein (Fergus Falls, MN) shut down the Wildcat bats allowing only 1 run (solo home run) in the 4th inning. Krein had great command with only 1 walk and 8 strikeouts. 

The Pioneers got all the runs they would need in the bottom of the 1st inning by scoring 3 runs. Malory Webb (SS - Idaho Falls, ID) led the inning off with a single. Arin Eaton (CF - Belgrade, MT) reached base on an error and moved to 2nd base. Dalilah Hernadez (2B - Laurel, MT) walked to load the bases and Addison Sanders (DP - Idaho Falls, ID) walked to bring in the 1st run of the game. With 2 outs, Khloey Robinson (LF - Belgrade, MT) singled to drive in 2 runs. 

MCC got 3 more runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning and all 3 runs came with 2 outs. Robinson singled and Adrie Mortensen (C - Rexburg, ID) walked. Brylee Lowell (RF - Columbus, MT) singled to drive in Robinson. Webb drew a walk to load the bases and Eaton came up clutch with a 2 RBI single. 

The Pioneers then added 2 more runs in the bottom of the 6th. Webb singled, stole 2nd, and then scored on a Wildcat error on a ground out by Eaton. Rian Ferriter (3B - Butte, MT) singled and Sierra Tuss (Belgrade, MT) came in to pinch run. Tuss moved to 2nd on a ground out and was driven in by a Sanders single. 

Webb and Robinson each had 2 hits for the Pioneers

  • The Pioneers had 9 hits (all singles) and the Wildcats had 5 (HR).
  • Each team had 3 stolen bases. 
  • NDSCS had the only 2 errors in the game. 
  • Pioneer batters struck out 4 times and walked 6 times.

Game 2 - Pioneers 9... NDSCS Wildcats 14

NDSCS used a 6 run 4th inning to break open and close game and earn a split of the 4-game series Sunday in Miles City. 

The Wildcats got on the board with a run in the top of the 1st. MCC tied the game with a run in the bottom of the 2nd inning scoring on an error by Wildcat pitcher after Dalilah Hernandez had reached 2nd base. NDSCS then went on a terror scoring the next 8 runs of the game and building a 9-1 lead. The Pioneers got a run in the bottom of the 4th after another Wildcat error. 

MCC then cut the lead to 9-5 with 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning. Adrie Mortensen led the inning off with a double and Brylee Lowell singled to put runners on corners. Malory Webb then doubled to drive in Mortensen. Lowell scored on a groundout from Arin Eaton. Webb scored on a sacrifice hit from Rian Ferriter

NDSCS put a firm grip on the game with 5 runs in top of the 6th. The Pioneers tried to rally with 4 runs in the bottom of the inning but 14-9 would be as close as they would get. Addison Sanders doubled and with one out Mortensen hit a 2-run home run. The final 2 runs came on another Wildcat error. 

Mortensen, Sanders, and Richardson each had 2 hits for the Pioneers. 

Rylynn Krein start the game pitching again after a strong effort in game 1. This time around Krein pitched 3 innings (5 R, 5 H, 3 BB) before giving way to Rylie Schlepp (Helena, MT) for the next 2 innings (6 R, 4 H, 3 BB, SO). Arin Eaton finished the final 2 innings 3 R, 4 H, 2 ER, BB, 2 SO).

  • The Pioneers had 9 hits (HR, 4 2B) and the Wildcats had 13 hits (2 HR, 5 2B).
  • NDSCS had 6 errors and the Pioneers had 2.
  • The Wildcats had 6 stolen bases and the Pioneers had 2. 
  • Pioneer batters struck out 4 times and walked once. 
  • Wildcat batters struck out 3 times and walked 7 times. 

The Pioneers lead the MonDak Conference with a 10-2 record and are 22-10 overall. NDSCS is close behind at 8-2 in conference. The Pioneers head to Glendive on Wedesday for a doubleheader against Dawson starting at 1:00 PM.
