Pioneers and NDSCS Split a Pair

Pioneers 9... NDSCS Wildcats 8 (8 Innings)

Dalilah Hernandez (2B - Laurel, MT) hit 2 home runs and drove in 3 as the MCC Pioneers needed extra innings after building a 4-0 1st inning lead and defeated NDSCS 9-8 in game 1 on Saturday afternoon. 

The Pioneers got 4 runs in the 1st inning scoring first on a passed ball. Brooke Richardson (1B - Helena, MT) then drove in Arin Eaton (CF - Belgrade, MT) with a RBI single and Hernandez followed that with a 2-run home run. 

NDSCS answered with 3 runs in the bottom of the 2nd to cut the Pioneer lead to 5-3. MCC got a run in the top of the 3rd to go up 6-3 on a RBI groundout from Adrie Mortensen (C - Rexburg, ID). The Wildcats picked up a run in the bottom of 4th to cut the MCC lead to 6-4.

MCC got 1 in the 5th on Hernandez 2nd home run of the game and then took a 8-4 lead with another run in the 6th inning on a sacrifice fly RBI off the bat of Rylynn Krein (P - Fergus Falls, MN). The Wildcats then rallied with 4 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to tie the score 8-8. Neither team would score in the 7th. 

In extra innings, teams start with a runner on 2nd base. Malory Webb (SS - Idaho Falls, ID) was placed at 2nd and scored on a RBI single from Richardson. The Pioneers shut the Wildcats out in the 8th to secure victory. Webb, Eaton, Richardson, Addison Sanders (3B, Idaho Falls, ID) and Hernandez all had 2 hits in the game. 

Krein was the pitcher for MCC and went 8 innings (8 R, 10 H, 4 BB, 8 SO).

  • The Pioneers had 11 hits (2 HR, 2B) and the Wildcats had 10 hits (2 2B).
  • Wildcat batters struck out 8 times and walked 4 times. Pioneer batters struck out 4 times and walked 3 times.

Game 2 - Pioneers 4... NDSCS Wildcats 12 (5 Innings)

The Pioneers got on the board first with a run in the top of the 1st inning but it was all downhill from there as the Wildcats plated 7 in the bottom of the 1st and never looked back in a 12-4 win to split games on Saturday in Miles City. 

NDSCS hit 2 home runs and 3 doubles in their first inning explosion. MCC picked up a run in the top of the 2nd as well on a Malory Webb RBI single. NDSCS countered that run with a run of their own in the 2nd inning and then 3 more in the 3rd to go up 11-2. 

The Pioneers tried to keep the game going with 2 runs in the 5th inning by scoring on a Wildcat error and RBI single from Hernandez. 

The Wildcats shut the door on the Pioneers ending the game with a run in bottom of 5th. 

Hernandez was the only Pioneer with 2 hits (2B). 

Rylie Schelpp (Helena, MT) got the start in the circle and pitched 2.2 innings (11 R, 10 H, 8 ER, 3 BB, 2 SO). Rian Ferriter (Butte, MT) pitched the final 2 innings (R, 3 H, SO).

Inside the Box Score

  • The Pioneers had 7 hits (2 2B) and the Wildcats had 13 hits (3 HR, 3 2B).
  • NDSCS had 2 errors and the Pioneers had 1.
  • Pioneer batters struck out 7 times and walked twice. Wildcat batters struck out 3 times and walked 3 times. 
  • NDSCS racked up 5 stolen bases to none for MCC. 

The Pioneers are 9-1 in MonDak Conference play and 21-9 overall. NDSCS is 7-1 and the teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 12:00 PM. The games will have a big impact on the MonDak Conference regular season title.
