Pioneer Softball Ends Weekend With Two More Wins

Game 1 - Pioneers 11... Dakota College at Bottineau 2 (5 Innings)

After a shaky start in which the Pioneers gave up 2 runs in the top of the 1st inning after a couple of hits and a couple of errors, MCC settled down and pitcher Madi Henry (Spanish Fork, UT) stayed calm and shut down the Lumberjacks the rest of the way in an 11-2 victory.

The Pioneers scored 3 runs in each of the 1st 2 innings and then 5 more in the 3rd to win game one going away. SS Sierra John (Idaho Falls, ID) led off the bottom of the 1st inning with a home run to kickstart the offense. RF Cassidy Bagnell (Frenchtown, MT) walked, LF Liz Ybarra (Belgrade, MT) singled advancing Bagnell to 3rd. CF Skylar Higgs (Livingston, MT) hit a sacrifice fly RBI to tie the game at 2-2. 1B Hazel Eaton (Belgrade, MT) singled to push Ybarra to 3rd allowing 3B Morgan Lampshire (Murray, UT) to ground in to a fielder's choice scoring Ybarra. 

MCC picked up 3 more in the 2nd inning highlighted by a couple of singles by Bagnell and Higgs combined with some Lumberjack errors and hit by pitches. The Pioneers then scored 5 runs in the 3rd inning starting out with back to back singles from 2B Shannon Nelson (Livingston, MT) and DP Alexa Lewis (Bozeman, MT). John walked to load up the bases and Bagnell connected with a 2 RBI double and an 8-2 lead. John then scored when LF Liz Ybarra (Belgrade, MT) reached on an error and Higgs followed that up with a 2 RBI double to give the Pioneers the 11-2 lead. 

Madi Henry had an excellent effort in the circle throwing a complete game 5 innings (4 H, 2 R, 7 SO) to get the win. 

Inside the Box Score

  • MCC had 10 hits and DCB only mustered up 4. 
  • DCB had 4 errors and the Pioneers had 2 (both in 1st inning).
  • The Pioneers had 3 stolen bases and the Lumberjacks had 2. 
  • The Pioneers walked 3 times and allowed none. 

 

Game 2 - Pioneers 15... DCB 8 

 

2B Mars Weaver (Rexburg, ID) came up with a 3-4 (2 2B, 4 RBI, 2 R) effort and RF Reed Johnson (Columbus, MT) was 3-5 (2 R) in a 15-hit attack that led the Pioneers to a 15-8 win over the DCB Jacks in game 2 of Sunday's doubleheader. 

3B Megan Johnson (Preston, ID) was the other Pioneer with multiple hits in a 2-5 effort (2 2B, 2 RBI, R) and every Pioneer that entered the lineup had a hit in the game. C Taylor Feller (Laurel, MT) hit the Pioneers only home run of the game and had 4 RBI. The Pioneers struck out only once in the game. 

Alex Carr (Idaho Falls, ID) started the game in the circle and went 6 full innings (8 H, 8 R, BB, 6 SO) before giving way in the final inning to Peyton Whitehead (Joliet, MT) who struck out one in a perfect inning. 

Inside the Box Score

  • MCC collected 15 hits and DCB had 8.
  • DCB committed 5 errors and the Pioneers had 3. 
  • MCC struck out only one time in the game and DCB struck out 7 times. 
  • Shannon Nelson had the only 2 stolen bases for the Pioneers. 

MCC is now 10-2 in MonDak Conference play and 23-4 overall. They will host Bismarck State College on Thursday afternoon at 2:30 and 4:30 PM.
