Blowouts Highlight Pioneer Softball Split With Dawson

Game 1 - Pioneers 1... Dawson 14 (5 Innings)

Things got bad in a hurry for the MCC Pioneers and never got better as Dawson came to Miles City and halted the Pioneers 12-game winning streak with a 14-1 win in 5 innings. 

Dawson piled on 6 runs in the 1st inning and followed that up with 6 more in the 2nd to take a 12-0 lead. The Pioneer's only bright spot of the game was a solo home run by 3B Taylor Feller (Laurel, MT) in the bottom of the 2nd inning. 

Dawson then scored 2 more in the 4th inning for the final margin of victory. 

The Pioneers only managed 5 hits in the game including a 2-3 (2B) effort from RF Cassidy Bagnell (Frenchtown, MT).

Hazel Eaton (Belgrade, MT) got the start for the Pioneers and had a rough outing as she didn't record an out and gave up 6 runs on 4 hits while walking one. Madi Henry (Spanish Fork, UT) came in relief for Eaton and pitched 3.1 innings (6 H, 8 R, 4 BB, 3 SO). Alex Carr (Idaho Falls, ID) finished the final 1.2 innings allowing only one hit. 

Inside the Box Score

  • Dawson outhit the Pioneers 11-5. Dawson hit 3 home runs and had 3 doubles. 
  • MCC committed the only error of the game. 
  • Dawson pitcher Heather Barratt did not walk a batter and recorded 9 strikeouts. 
  • Dawson had 4 stolen bases and MCC had none.

 

Game 2 - Pioneers 14... Dawson 5 (6 Innings)

The Pioneers reversed their fortunes quickly getting off to a hot start in game 2 and riding that wave of momentum to a 14-5 win in 6 innings to salvage a split. MCC got 3 runs in the 1st inning after a SS Sierra John (Idaho Falls, ID) single and Cassidy Bagnell reaching base on a Dawson error. John advanced to 3rd on the next play and scored on a sacrifice fly by CF Skylar Higgs (Livingston, MT).  With Bagnell hanging out at 2nd base, Hazel Eaton ripped a home run to right field and a 3-0 lead. 

MCC got 3 more in the 3rd innings when Bagnell started the inning with a single. Bagnell was out at 2nd after a fielder's choice from LF Liz Ybarra's (Belgrade, MT) bat. Higgs singled to put runners on 1st and 2nd before Hazel Eaton cracked her 2nd home run of the game for a 6-0 lead. 

Dawson picked up a run in the bottom of the 3rd but the Pioneers stretched the lead to 9-1 with 3 more runs in the 4th. With 2 outs in the 4th, Bagnell and Ybarra each singled setting the table for a Skylar Higgs 3-run blast and a 9-1 lead. MCC took the 5th inning off from scoring but then piled up 5 more runs in the 6th for a 14-2 lead. Bagnell and Ybarra each singled again, then with one out, Hazel Eaton walked to load the bases. C Taylor Feller quickly knocked a double to center field that scored 2 runners. 3B Morgan Lampshire (Murrray, UT) then hit a 3-run blast to finish the Pioneer scoring. 

Dawson did pick up 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th but it was not enough to keep the game going. 

Peyton Whitehead (Joliet, MT) got the start in the circle going a complete game 6 innings (5 R, 5 H, 2 BB, 5 SO). The win moved the Pioneers to 5-1 in MonDak Conference play and 18-3 overall.
