Pioneer Softball Kicks Off Season With a Split in Minot

Game 1 - Pioneers 4... Bismarck State 1 (6 Innings)

Hazel Eaton (Belgrade, MT) got the MCC Pioneers season started with a bang by throwing a complete game 2-hitter as the Pioneers defeated Bismarck State 4-1. Eaton struck out 10 Mystics and walking only 1 in 6 complete innings. 

The Pioneers scored 4 runs of 5 hits led by Morgan Lampshire (Catcher, Murray, UT) going 2-3 with 1 RBI. Leftfielder Liz Ybarra (Belgrade, MT) got the 1st RBI of the 2022 season in the first inning driving in Sierra John (Idaho Falls, ID) after she walked. Ybarra had 2 RBI in the game. The Pioneers other hits came off a double from 3B Kelealani Waiau (Puget Sound, WA) and Eaton who had a double and an RBI.

  • The Pioneers had 3 walks and Bismark State 2. 
  • BSC struck out 6 Pioneer batters. 
  • The Pioneers scored 2 in the bottom of the 5th after BSC had cut the lead to 2-1 in the 4th. 

Game 2 - Pioneers 5... NDSCS 6 (5 Innings)

The NDSCS Wildcats got an RBI single in the bottom of the 5th inning with 2 outs to pull out an exciting 6-5 victory over MCC in a game that went only 5 innings due to a time limit in Minot, ND. CF Reed Johnson had tied the game in the top of the 5th with an RBI single that scored Kelealani Waiau (Puget Sound, WA). 

Waiau took to the circle for the Pioneers in the 2nd game of the doubleheader. She gave up 6 runs on 6 hits while striking out 5 and walking 5 Wildcats. Waiau threw 115 pitches with 66 of those being strikes.

Freshman LF Liz Ybarra (Belgrade, MT) had an excellent game at the plate going 3-3 with an RBI and a run scored. She had a single, double, and a triple to account for her 3 hits. 1B Hazel Eaton was 1-2 at the plate with an RBI double in the first inning.

  • NDSCS pitcher struck out 5 Pioneers. 

MCC is 1-1 on the season and will face Dakota College at Bottineau at 9:00 AM MST and Williston State College at 11:00 AM MST on the 2nd day of the MonDak Conference preseason event in Minot, ND.
