Strong Pitching Leads Opening Spring Break Trip Wins Over Cal Miramar

Game 1 - Pioneers 10... Cal Miramar 4

The MCC Pioneers got things rolling in the 2nd inning by posting 4 runs and never looked back in a 19-0 win over California Miramar University on the 1st day of spring break trip in Tucson, Arizona. The Pioneers added another run in the 4th inning on a RBI single from Chance Descalchuk (DH - Regina, Saskatchewan).

MCC blew things open in the top of the 7th with 5 runs to build a 10-0 lead. Cal Miramar struck up 4 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning but it just wasn't enough to rally. 

Luke Thorne (SS - Missoula, MT) was the only Pioneer with 2 hits. Every batter in the lineup had one hit except Raymond Shawver (RF - Miles City, MT) who walked twice and scored 2 runs. Descalchuck had 2 RBI as did Chaise Tracy (3B - Billings, MT)

Tanner Hagar (Casper, WY) got the start and pitched 6 innings. Hagar was stellar on the mound, throwing a no-hitter. Cal Miramar got 3 runs on no hits as Hagar walked 3 batters and struck out 4. Ryan Kelly (Miles City, MT) pitched the 7th inning (2 H, R, SO).

  • MCC committed one error and Miramar had 3.

Game 2 - Pioneers 10 ... Cal Miramar 1

Dane Gilbert (1B - Monument, CO) and Liam Sullivan (LF - Great Falls, MT) combined for 6 of the 10 Pioneer hits and 6 of 9 RBI's as the Pioneers swept the opening day of their spring break trip with a 10-1 win in game 2 on Monday night in Tucson, AZ. 

MCC got off to a hot start with 3 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. The Pioneers got RBI singles from Sullivan and Chaise Tracey followed by a RBI double from Luke Thorne

  • The score stayed that way until the top of the 4th when Miramar added their only run of the game. MCC answered with 4 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning to extend the lead to 7-1. The big blow was a 2-RBI triple off the bat of Gilbert. 
  • The Pioneers put the lock on the treasure chest with 3 more funs in the bottom of the 6th. Sullivan had a 2 RBI singe in the inning. 

Lee Neugebauer (Rapid City, SD) followed up his 16 strikeout performance last weekend with another solid outing on the mound. Neugebauer pitched 4 innings (R, 3 H, ER, BB, 4 SO) to pick up another win. Croyden Christensen (Kaysville, UT) pitched the next 2 innings (H) and Logan Bertagnolli (West Jordan, UT) threw the final inning (2 H, BB, SO).

MCC will play Cal Miramar again on Tuesday at 11:00 AM followed by a game with Gustavus Adolphus College JV at 2:00 PM.
