Wally Badgett was raised on ranch in southeastern Montana, near Ashland. He attended Sheridan College on a rodeo scholarship and was the National Intercollegiate Champion bull rider in 1971.

After college, he rodeoed in the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association until 1979, competing in saddle bronc and bull riding. In 1975, he was the Montana Pro Circuit champion bull rider and All-Around Cowboy runner up. During his final years of rodeo in the 1970's he leased a ranch near Ashland. In the 1980's, he took off on an extra job as a deputy sheriff for Rosebud County.

He moved to Miles City in 1985 and worked as a deputy sheriff for Custer County until 1996. In 1996, he resigned from law enforcement to purse a career as a syndicated cartoonist. Shortly after that, he started as an assistant coach to former MCC rodeo coach Larry Torstenbo. He has been the head rodeo coach at MCC since 2003.

He has been married to his wife Pam, a 4th grade teacher at Lincoln School, for 37 years. Their daughter Whitney teaches at a private school in Point Arena, California.

Their son Brett is a former horse trainer for Copper Springs Ranch in Bozeman. He currently teaches Equine Science at Miles CC and is also a nationally recognized sculptor.
