The Pioneers took on the nationally ranked Pronghorns of Gillette College on Saturday, February 3 at Kailey Gymnasium. MCC surprised Gillette College with their play. They shot the ball better than the Pronghorns and took a 7-point lead into the locker room at halftime. The Pioneers held the lead up until the very end and made the conference-leading Pronghorns really work for the 83-79 victory. Coach Chase Tait commented, “It was a very disappointing loss and I feel for our players. They competed and battled and led the #9 team in the nation for 39 minutes. We led every statistical category except for Free Throws and I felt we really deserved to win. The ball took a couple of sideways bounces for us late and Gillette hit a couple of huge shots in the last minute. I give them credit for making those plays. I was proud of how our guys played and competed and I think we have shown that if and when we play well, we can play with any team in our league. We just need to get over that hump.”
Perion Little and Gavin Gundlach were the high scorers with 18 points apiece. Erie Olonade and Andrea LoBiondo were close behind with 14 apiece.
The Pioneers will be in action again on Wednesday, as they head to Casper, WY to take on the Thunderbirds of Casper College at 7:30pm.
