Lady Pioneers honored as NJCAA All-Academic Team of the Year

(Colorado Springs, CO) The Lady Pioneers of Miles Community College have been selected as the 2013-2014 NJCAA Women's Basketball All-Academic Team of the Year, announced by the national office on Tuesday.

The award is given out annually to a team with the highest combined grade point average in each respective sport. According to the article released on Tuesday, "The minimum grade point average requirement for consideration is a team GPA of 3.00."

The Lady Pioneers finished with an impressive 3.59 grade point average, and therefore was selected as the Academic Team of the Year.

Head Coach Liz Lewis is extremely proud of this group of young women in the classroom. "I am so incredibly proud of my girls. They have worked extremely hard in the classroom this year. As a coaching staff we place a lot of emphasis on the importance of academics. We also believe in implementing the necessary tools to ensure personal success in the classroom. This award is a great honor for our program and a great representation of the quality education Miles Community College has to offer. We have a great faculty and staff dedicated to our students success."

In addition to the team award, sophomores Tess Blaquiere and Ashley Malmquist were honored individually as recipients of the Exemplary Academic Achievement Award as both finished their academic careers with grade point averages over 3.60.

"At the beginning of the season, our team set a cumulative GPA goal of a 3.5, which at the time I believed to be an exceptionally challenging goal. The team worked hard in the classroom and were able to achieve this goal. I am very proud of each member of our team for making and individual, focused effort to contribute to this goal. I am also extremely proud of Tess Blaquiere and Ashley Malmquist for receiving the Exemplary Academic Achievement Award. This is a testament of the work ethic and dedication that these young ladies have; they deserve this recognition."
