Lady Pioneers beat Lady Buccaneers

Reynan hits game winner late to down Dawson

Miles City, MT)- The Miles Community College Lady Pioneers (14-8 overall, 4-5 Region IX) survived a back and forth contest to defeat in-state rival Dawson CC on Wednesday night in front of a large and rowdy crowd, 54-53.

Janae Reynen (Culbertson, MT) followed an Ivana Grbic (Belgrade, Serbia) miss with an offensive rebound putback with 13 seconds left and the Pioneers held on for the victory. Dawson was unable to tie the game or win it as time expired as a long range 3 pointer bounced off the rim. Reynen lead all scorers with 17 points, while Grbic added 13 points and Taylor Lepley (Shepherd, MT) chipped in 11 for the victors. The victory completed a series sweep over Dawson, as the Pioneers won in Glendive on December 5, 68-61.

Pioneer Head Coach Cathy Hanek was pleased with her team’s persistence and toughness down the stretch. “We withstood some big made baskets by Dawson and the girls just kept competing. Ultimately, we found a way to get it done down the stretch and hopefully we can keep the momentum of tonight’s win going as we prepare for the rest of our league schedule”.

The Lady Pioneers will take a break from their Region IX conference schedule, as they travel across the state line to North Dakota on Saturday February 2nd to take on Region XIII member Williston State College Lady Tetons in a non-conference matchup. “It will be nice to take a break from our conference schedule and play a quality opponent in Williston. We will have our hands full on Saturday as they have a great inside-outside combination with Maggie Lorenz and Samantha Schell inside and Jazzmine Robinson on the outside. We will have to control their inside game, take care of the ball and get quality shots for us to be successful”. Game time is set for 6:00 pm CST.
