Lady Pioneer fall to Gillette

Freya Newton scored 19 points and grabbed 8 rebounds while Kenosha Wright added 10 points and 8 rebounds as the Gillette College Lady Pronghorns held off the MCC Lady Pioneers 60-51 at the Centra Saturday night. In what was a tightly contested low scoring first half, Newton hit a 3-point basket at the buzzer to send the Pronghorns into the half with a 26-23 lead. Gillette led by as many as 6 in the first half and the Lady Pioneers clawed back into the game several times leading by one a few times. The Lady Pioneers just could not climb out of the halftime hole and a paltry 30% shooting effort for the game hindered any hopes of a comeback victory. MCC connected only 15-50 FG attempts including only one 3-point basket and could not overcome several missed layups during the game. Only a 20-27 effort from the FT kept the Lady Pioneers in striking distance. Miles CC was led by Tess Blaquiere (Miles City, MT) with 14 points on 6-17 shooting. Taylor Lepley (Shepherd, MT) chipped in with 12 including 7-7 from the FT line and Ivana Grbic (Belgrade, Serbia) also finished with 12. Tessa Rouane (Columbus, MT) led the rebounding efforts with 10 as the Lady Pioneers outrebounded Gillette 42-33 on the day. The Lady Pioneers fall to 11-4 overall and 1-1 in Region IX play.  Next up for MCC is a trip to perennial Region IX powerhouse Casper College on Wednesday night at 5:30 PM. The team then returns home to host Central Wyoming on Saturday, January 12 @ 3:00 PM.
