Lady Pioneers Fall to Casper College in Quarters

(Miles City, MT) – The Miles Community College women’s basketball team was defeated last night by Casper College 61-52 in the quarterfinals of the Region IX tournament.  With the loss, the Lady Pioneers’ season comes to a close and finishes the year with a 22-10 record. 

Early in the first half of the contest Miles Community College led Casper College, the host of the tournament 19-11 and held onto the lead until the closing minute of the period.  At the break Casper held a slim three point margin, 24-21 with the help of a 13-2 run to regain the lead.  Miles struggled from the field in the opening period, hitting just 31 percent from the floor while Casper shot 38 percent.

After the break, Miles hung with the #4 ranked Lady T-Birds and trailed by just one at the 14:14 mark.  With the score 33-32, Casper went on an 18-2 run to push the lead out to 18 points with just over six minutes remaining in the contest.  MCC slowly chipped away the deficit and getting within 58-52 with 1:08 on the clock.  Casper would hit 3-of-4 from the free throw line to seal the victory.

The Lady Pioneers finished the game shooting 35 percent from the floor while Casper hit 39 percent.  The home team won the battle of the glass commandingly, outrebound MCC 38-24, including a 14-9 edge on the offensive end. 

Miles has three players, all freshmen, in double figures led by Ivana Grbic (Belgrade, Serbia) with 17 points and Tessa Rouane (Columbus) finished with 16.  Janae Reynan (Culbertson) chipped in 10 points off the bench, the only points from the bench for the Lady Pioneers. 

Sophomore point guard Christen Lopez (West Jordan, UT) pulled down a game-high seven rebounds and handed out five assists in the loss. 

Casper College will match up against Northeastern Junior College (Sterling, CO) in the late semifinal while Otero Junior College (CO) and Central Wyoming College face each other in the first game of the evening.
