Women Defeat WWCC 78-74

(Miles City, MT) – The Miles Community College women’s basketball squad wrapped up the 2011-12 regular season with a 78-74 victory over Western Wyoming Community College in Rock Springs Tuesday night.  With the win, the Lady Pioneers finish the year 21-9 overall and 9-7 in the sub-region. 

The women’s game saw the two teams exchange the lead nine times and tie eight different times over the 40 minutes of action.  The Lady Pioneers trailed by as many as nine (39-30) early in the second half before outscoring Western Wyoming 48-35 the remaining of the half to pull out the 78-74 victory. 

After struggling from the floor in the first half, shooting just 28 percent, Miles bounced back in the second half shooting 55 percent to finish at 40 percent for the contest.  Despite giving up a slight advantage on the rebounding edge, the Lady Pioneers outscored the home team 18-9 in second chance points. 

Five different players scored in double figures for MCC, led by Ivana Grbic (Belgrade, Serbia) with 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor.  Point guard Christen Lopez (West Jordan, UT) added 15 on 5-of-6 shooting, while Bailey Wilson (Columbus) pitched in 12 and both Taylor Lepley (Shepherd) and Tessa Rouane (Columbus) scored 10 apiece to help Miles to the victory. 

Kassie Barta (Fairfield) pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds and Grbic grabbed nine of her own.  Lopez finished the night with five assists, five rebounds, and three steals playing in all 40 minutes. 

Up next for MCC’s women’s basketball team is the Region IX Tournament in Casper, Wyoming beginning on March 9th.  The Lady Pioneers will take the 5th seed out of the North and face the #4 seed from the South Sub-region, which could either be Northeastern Community College (Beatrice, NE) or McCook Community College (NE) depending on the output of their contest tomorrow night.
