Lady Pioneers snap 3-game skid with win

(Miles City, MT) – The Miles Community College women's basketball team defeated Central Wyoming College 66-56 in a Region IX North Sub-region matchup last night.  With the win, MCC moves to 18-8 overall and 6-6 in the sub region.

It took just over six minutes before either team would reach double figures as the opening minutes saw the Lady Rustlers open up with a 10-6 lead.  CWC stretched out their lead to 11 points, their largest of the game with 8:39 on the clock.  Throughout the remaining minutes, the home team managed to cut the margin down to just four points, 29-25, at the half. 

In the opening minutes of the second half, CWC pushed the lead out to seven before the Lady Pioneers would come back and tie the game up at 40 apiece with 13:45 remaining.  Over the next two minutes, the game went back and forth as there were three more ties before MCC would gain the lead for good at the 9:54 mark.  With just under five minutes left in the contest, Miles pushed the lead out to double figures and out to as many as 14 points (62-48). 

After shooting just 30 percent in the opening period, MCC hit 56 percent in the second to finish shooting 42 percent from the field.  While holding the opponent to 38 percent shooting in the contest. 

The key to game was free throws, in the opening half, Central could have had an even bigger lead but shot just 6-of-14 from the stripe.  MCC hit 10-of-13 in the second half and 15-of-18 for the contest in the win. 

Kassie Barta (Fairfield) and Ivana Grbic (Belgrade, Serbia) led the team in scoring with 22 and 12, respectively.  Janae Reynan (Culbertson) added nine and all eight players dressed for the game scored for the Lady Pioneers. 

Grbic pulled down a game-high eight rebounds, while Barta added seven of her own. 

Point guard Christen Lopez (West Jordan, UT) handed out a game-high seven assists while adding five points and five rebounds.  This was the sixth time this season where she’s finished with at least five points, five assists, and five rebounds.  She’s currently leading the region with 137 total assists on the season and 22nd in the nation.

Up next for the Lady Pioneers is a pair of road trips to Wyoming in the next five days as they face Northwest College (Powell) on Saturday and then Sheridan College on Wednesday.
