MCC Women Fall to Gillette at Home

(Miles City, MT) – The women’s basketball team from Miles Community College were defeated by Gillette College 62-55 in a Region IX North sub-region matchup.  With the loss, the Lady Pioneers drop to 17-7 overall and 5-5 in the sub-region. 

The Lady Pioneers fell behind from the beginning as Gillette took an early 4-0 lead before MCC tied it up at four apiece 17:00 on the clock in the half.  Despite tying the game, MCC just couldn’t take the lead as they trailed from that point forward.  Gillette pushed the lead out to six several times, however Miles would battle back and cut it to one.  With just over three minutes remaining in the half, the Lady Pronghorns pushed the lead out to double figures before eventually taking a five-point lead (30-25) into intermission.  MCC continued their shooting woes, struggling from the floor as they hit just 28 percent, while GC hit nearly 40 percent in the first half.  The Lady Pronghorns also outrebounded 30-15 the home team in the opening period. 

Going into the second half, MCC cut the deficit down to four several times before the Lady Pronghorns stretched their lead out to double figures with six minutes remaining in the contest.  In the closing minutes, the Lady Pioneers couldn’t get any closer than six points before taking the 62-55 loss. 

Gillette capitalized on their opportunities at the free throw line, hitting 15-of-21 while MCC went 5-for-9 at the stripe.  The size and strength of the Lady Pronghorns outrebounded the home team 58-29.

MCC managed to shoot just 32 percent (21-of-65) from the field.  Nearly half of their field goal attempts (31) were outside of the three-point line.  On the defensive end, Miles forced 26 turnovers and kept Gillette to just under 42 percent from the floor. 

Ivana Grbic (Belgrade, Serbia) and Madare Laure (Riga, Latvia) each scored a team-high 11 points in the loss.  Christen Lopez (West Jordan, UT) scored eight points, pulled down seven rebounds, handed out six assists, and added four steals.
