Women Use Free Throws to Defeat Dawson

The Miles Community College women's basketball squad picked up an opening round win in the Mon/Dak Conference Preseason Tournament in Williston yesterday afternoon as they defeated in-state rival Dawson Community College 71-59 to advance to today’s semifinals. 

MCC jumped out to an early lead against the Lady Bucs as they converted 14 Dawson turnovers into 15 points in the opening period to take a 35-26 lead into the intermission.  Both teams shot around the 50% mark in the first half as MCC connected on 14-of-30 for 46.7 percent and Dawson hit 12-of-23 shots for 52.2 percent. 

In the second half, the Pioneers stretched the lead out to as many as 16 points (42-26) with 16:28 remaining in the contest before Dawson ran off on an 18-2 run over the next three minutes to tie the contest up at 44 apiece.  MCC would bounce back with a 12-2 run of their own to stretch the lead back to double figures. 

Despite struggling from the field in the second half, the Pioneers connected on 15-of-18 free throws to keep the lead in double figures over the final six minutes of the contest. 

Four different players scored in double figures for the Pioneers, led by sophomore Ieva Jansone (Riga, Latvia) with 16 points.  Fellow sophomore Shaye Murphy (Riverton, Utah) picked up a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds in the win.  Freshmen Christen Lopez (West Jordan, Utah) and Ivana Domljanovic (Split, Croatia) scored 12 and 10 points respectively. 

Murphy and Domljanovic helped MCC win the battle on boards, outrebounding Dawson 39-26.  The Pioneers pulled down 19 offensive rebounds, leading to 10 second-chance points. 

Miles Community College will face Lake Region State College at 1:00 PM today in the first semifinal of the women’s bracket.
