Box Score

(Miles City, MT) -- The Miles Community College Pioneers rounded out the 2010 Foundation Classic with a contest against nationally ranked North Idaho College.  In the first game of the night, the MCC women dropped the contest against the sixth ranked Lady Cardinals 74-54.  This is believed to be the first time  that MCC has hosted a pair of top 10 teams the same night.  Over the years, MCC has seen several top 25 teams come through Kailey Gymnasium, including a couple of their own, including just a couple of years ago in 2007-08 when the Pioneers were ranked 12th in the country.

The first game of the night saw the two women's teams battle back and forth in the first half as North Idaho College took a slim 34-28 lead into the intermission.  MCC stayed within striking distance of the Lady Cardinals throughout the first half, including a 10-0 run halfway through the period to tie the game up after falling behind 15-5 early in the period.  NIC jumped out to another ten-point lead with just over a minute left in the half before outscoring the Lady Cardinals 6-2 in the final seconds of the opening period.

The second half saw the nationally ranked Lady Cardinals to slowly extend their lead with the help of their size and depth to wear down the Pioneers.  MCC committed 12 turnovers in the period that led to 20 points for NIC.  The Pioneers forced 12 turnovers as well, but were only able to capitalize them into 10 points.

Miles Community College was held to just 30 percent shooting from the floor, including hitting just four of 13 from beyond the arc.  After scoring 27 points the night before, Ieva Jansone (Latvia) was held to 14 points on five-of-16 shooting.  Shaye Murphy (Riverton, Utah) was the lone other player in double figures for Miles Community College as she finished with 12 points.

On the flip side, NIC connected on just under 50 percent from the floor and out rebounded MCC 44-29 with their height advantage.  The one place where MCC held an advantage over NIC was at the charity stripe where they hit and attempted twice as many free throws as North Idaho.

The women team will travel to Williston, North Dakota for the Mon/Dak Conference Preseason-Tournament next week.  The women will face Dawson Community College in the opening round of the tournament.
