MCC Women's Basketball Wins Home Opener

Up next...6th ranked NIC

(Miles City, MT) ¬ The Miles Community College Pioneer women's basketball team picked up a season opener win against the JV squad from Rocky Mountain College (Billings) tonight.  The women defeated the Lady Bears 81-52.

In the first game of the season for the MCC women, three different players scored in double figures.  Ieva Jansone (Latvia) led the team with 27 points, while Shaye Murphy (Riverton, Utah) and Taylor Henderson (Miles City) each added 10 apiece for the Pioneers.

The Pioneers led start to finish as Jansone hit a field goal and freshman guard Christen Lopez (West Jordan, Utah) hit a three-point shot after a turnover by Rocky to take a quick five-point lead in the opening seconds of the contest.  Jansone added another and Ilvana Domljanovic (Croatia) scored her first two collegiate points to help MCC jump out to quick 9-0 lead in the first minute and a half of the contest.

The defensive of MCC kept RMC from reaching double digits until the midway point of the first half as the Pioneers led 24-9 with 10:04 remaining on the clock.  The score was nearly even for the rest of the half as Miles took a 46-29 lead into intermission.

Jansone scored 17 of her game-high 27 points in the opening period as she hit on eight-of-12 field goals.  The one place where Rocky played even with the Pioneers in the first half was on the glass as each team pulled down 16 rebounds.

The second half was much of the same as the Pioneers stretched out the lead to 30 points before sealing the 81-52 victory.  MCC shut down the Lady Bears in the second half, allowing RMC to shot just 25% on seven-of-28.

Rocky turned the ball over 27 times, leading to 21 points from the Pioneers.  Miles Community College turned it over 19 times, but only allowing RMC to score just four points.  Lopez handed out five of MCC’s 18 assists and also picked up five steals on the other end of the court as well.

Jansone also lead the squad in rebounding with six while Domljanovic and freshman Kassie Barta (Fairfield) each pulled down five rebounds.  Despite a small margin in rebounds, MCC outscored Rocky 9-2 in second-chance points.

MCC will host sixth ranked North Idaho College on the second day of the Foundation Classic beginning at 4:30 PM.
