Lady Pioneers fall to NJC in Region IX Tourney --MCC Women End Season 22-8

(Miles City, MT) -- The Lady Pioneers fall to Northeastern Junior College (Colorado) 73-67 in the second round of the women's Region IX Basketball Tournament in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. With the loss, MCC ends their season with a 22-8 record. After defeating Central Wyoming College in the first round, MCC matched up against NJC in the second round.

Miles Community College led nearly the whole first half , after being tied at 5-5 two minutes into the game, Bak hit a three to give the Pioneers the lead. MCC held a nine point lead (42-33) at the break before going ice cold in the second half. The Lady Pioneers were held to eight of 30 shooting from the floor and were outscored 40-25 in the period. Miles opened up a 13 point lead with 16 minutes left to go in the contest. NJC then went on a 17-4 run to tie the contest up at 50 apiece at the halfway point of the second half. Over the next 5:38, the lead switched hands five different times. MCC was held scoreless over a three minute stretch before scoring six points to cut the lead to two (67-65) with a minute left. NJC hit six of of eight from the free throw line to seal the victory. Sophomore Beata Bak (Poland) nearly had a triple double, despite numbers she doesn't want. She scored 20 points, pulled down 16 rebounds, and finished the contest with nine turnovers. From the floor, she shot just four of 18 from the field, but connected on 11 of 12 from the charity stripe.

Turnovers were the story of Miles Community College, as they committed 28 turnovers resulting to 26 NJC points. Northeastern committed just 16. Bak, not the only Lady Pioneer that struggled from the floor, guard Kristen Brady (Lame Deer) hit just two of 10 from the floor and finished with just six points. Guards Shannon Hildreth (Riverton, Utah) and Dale Samuels (Denver) each finished the night in double digits with 12 and 11 points, respectively. NJC was led by Sabella Diata with 17 points with three others in double figures.
