Basketball (M)

Valentine’s Day was a great day for the Pioneers. MCC took on the Trappers of Northwest College in the Kailey Gymnasium on Wednesday night. With the gym decorated in Pink for “Ballin’ For A Cure” night and the Pioneers all decked out in pink, they were ready to play. The Pioneers shot the ball great all night long and took a 52-34 lead into the half. The Trappers were able to rally back in the second half to force overtime. The teams were evenly matched in the first overtime, forcing a second OT. This time, the Pioneers were able pull away for good and take the win 111-102. Coach Chase Tait commented on the victory, “I was pleased with the effort and performance of our guys last night. We got off to a great start and really had things rolling. I don’t think we lacked effort in the second half, but we just couldn’t get anything to go down for a stretch in the second half and Northwest turned the tides on us and made it a great game. The most impressive thing to me was we kept our composure after losing a 20 point lead and made the plays that needed to be made down the stretch of regulation, overtime, and the 2nd overtime to keep the game going and eventually come out on top. We missed several shots in a row at one point and it looked like the tide had totally shifted, but we just grinded it out and made some timely plays and got some big stops. I like how we are playing with just a couple games to go. We are going to be a tough team to beat in the Region 9 Tourney.”

Erie Olonade put up a double-double with a season high 37 points and 12 rebounds. Daquazemarr Wyche and Andrea LoBiondo each added 18 to the effort.

The Pioneers head to Rock Springs, WY on Saturday, February 17 to take on the Mustangs of Western Wyoming Community College at 4:00 pm.
