Over the weekend, the Pioneers traveled to Williston, ND to participate in the Ramada Williston Teton Holiday Classic. Friday, MCC took on the North Dakota All-Stars, consisting of former WSC players. It was a tight game up until the end with the All Stars holding a lead with just a few minutes left in the game. The Pioneers were able to rally back for the win, beating the All-Stars 90-80. Coach Nate Vogel had mixed feelings about the win. “We played well offensively, getting 5 players in double figures. However, our defense left a lot to be desired. We came out with another win, but felt like we can and need to get better.”

Saturday, the Pioneers faced the host team, Williston Tetons. The Pioneers started off the game hot and shot “lights out” the entire game. At the end of the first half, the women were shooting an amazing 12-21 (57%) from beyond the 3-point arc. The Pioneers kept up the momentum in the second half and bested the Tetons 97-46. “This was the best game we have played all year. We made some adjustments in the starting lineup as we’ve been winning, but not playing well the last few games. Laura Moya got us off to a great start, getting a steal to establish the intensity we played with for the rest of the game. As always, we had new people step up and play great.”

The Women spread the ball around well with 5 players, again, in double figures. Paula Rosello Mateu was the high scorer with 20. Marina Peinado Balaguer followed closely with 18 points, all from 3 point land. Coach Nate Vogel commented, “I’ve played, coached and watched a lot of basketball games in my life. This game we had the best 3 point shooting performance I’ve ever seen. We finished the game 19/33 from behind the arc (58%)."

The Pioneers will be in action again this weekend in Gillette, WY as they take on Yellowstone Christian College on Friday, December 15 at 5:30pm and Fort Carson on Saturday, December 16 at 2pm.
