Pioneer Sweeps Season Series vs Dawson

Box Score

(Miles City, MT) The Miles Community College Pioneers took on the Dawson Community College Buccaneers in a single nine inning game on Wednesday at Denton Field in Miles City.

Wednesday’s contest is the second matchup of the year between the two eastern Montana teams and the Pioneers are coming into the midweek game after their four game set with Colby CC was cancelled last weekend.

“I think the weekend off wasn’t such a bad thing for us,” said head coach Jeff Brabant, “it was a great chance to recharge the batteries a little bit.”

The Pioneers used a plethora of pitching on Wednesday to earn the win against the Bucs. Shane Groth, Beau Thomas, Mitch Hughson, Cody Frenk, Parker McRae, Jonathan Ringer, Logan DeCock, Braxton Boyle, and Ty Jones combined to allow zero earned runs on only seven hits while striking out 9 and walking four.

MCC struggled defensively as they committed eight errors in the field to allow nine Dawson runs.

“It was a struggle on defense,” said Coach Brabant, “you can’t expect to compete at this level if you can’t make routine plays. When you give teams six outs an inning they are going to score, it doesn’t matter how well we pitch. It doesn’t matter how many runs we score, if we can’t throw strikes and play defense, we are going to be on the losing end of a lot of dog fights.”

Despite the lack of defense, MCC got it done at the plate on Wednesday stringing together 12 hits to put 12 runs up on the board. Ty Jones led the offense with two solo homeruns while Braxton Boyle broke the ice in the first inning with an RBI triple. Dakota Crowe would finish the game with three RBIs.

The win against Dawson makes it two in a row for the Pioneers. The Pioneers will have their conference bye week this Saturday and Sunday before gearing up for a six game series in McCook, NE next weekend.

“We have a lot of ground to make up and it starts tomorrow,” said Jeff Brabant on the upcoming week, “our guys need to buy in with what we are doing or our next three series will be no different than our first three series of the year. We are going to make some adjustments this week and mix things up. We are going to find nine guys that are 100% bought in and we will go from there.”
