Lady Pioneers Roll Past Trappers in 2OT

Box Score

(Miles City, MT) The Miles Community College Lady Pioneers took on the Lady Trappers of Northwest College on Wednesday night at Kailey gymnasium in Miles City.

The Lady Pioneers (15-11, 6-5 conf.) are coming off three straight Region IX wins and have momentum heading into Wednesday night’s contest. Northwest College (13-14, 4-7 conf.) are coming in after a win against Little Big Horn. MCC sat one game ahead of NWC in the Region IX standings and a win on Wednesday would put the Lady Pioneers closer to hosting their first sub region playoff game in over three years.

In a double OT thriller, the second of MCC’s season this year, the Lady Pioneers put on a show for the home crowd as they bested Northwest College 79-71 after 50 minutes of play.

In a game that was back and forth game where the lead changed hands 8 times, it was no doubt that it would take more than regulation to decide a victor.

The Lady Pioneer struggled early to get any offense going in the first but a string of possessions in the second quarter put MCC on top. Tia Torio and Jennifer Burnham each hit a pair of threes in the middle half of the second quarter to put the Lady ‘Neers in the lead and cap off an 8-0 run that gave MCC its’ largest lead of the game. After trailing by four heading into the second quarter, MCC walked off the court at half with a 30-24 lead.

Northwest College came out of the locker room with some fire after surrendering their first quarter lead to the Lady Pioneers and strung together four consecutive scoring possessions to take the lead back half way through the third quarter. NWC would finish the quarter on a 17-3 run and would head into the final quarter of play with a four point lead.

In the fourth, MCC would get the lead back after Colleen Katoa hit her second triple of the fourth quarter. The game would stay neck and neck until a Jennifer Burnham free throw with less than 30 seconds put MCC up by a score. A Domenica Gomes layup with 15 seconds knotted the game up at 55’s and the game was bound for OT.

MCC found their backs against the wall after NWC’s Jessie Lessard hit a three point shot with 25 seconds to go, but freshman Kyra Fleharty fired a three point shot found nothing but twine with seven seconds to go. After a NWC turnover, MCC had a chance for the win with five seconds to play, but Isidora Tasovic’s jump shot from the top of the key missed its mark and the game was set for double OT.

The Lady Pioneers held strong in the second overtime despite being without sophomore leader Tia Torio, who fouled out at the end of regulation. MCC relied on Jennifer Burnham to run the point and she answered the call scoring six of MCC’s 11 points in the period to seal the 79-71 win, MCC’s fourth conference win in a row.

Jennifer Burnham would prove to be the difference maker in the game with 24 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Tia Torio and Colleen Katoa would also land in double digits for the Lady Pioneers. Mary Bode would be a force inside, falling two points short of a double-double finishing the game with 13 rebounds and 8 points.

Next up for the Lady ‘Neers:

MCC will head to Gillette and look to make it five wins in a row in Region IX. MCC is in the driver seat to host a sub-region playoff game with only three conference games to go.
