Men Drop Heart Breaker in Sheridan

Box Score

(Sheridan, WY) The Miles Community College Pioneers hit the road to take on Sheridan College Generals on Saturday night in Region IX play.

MCC is taking on Sheridan after an early season home loss to the Generals in January.

Montenia Nelson, Adoum Mbang, and Perion Little all landed in double digits in scoring on Saturday afternoon but it wasn’t enough to overcome a last second shot by the Generals. Sheridan College jumped ahead 73-71 as time expired to pick up the weekend win.

The Pioneers had a rough first half shooting under 30% from the field including an 0 for 8 first half performance from behind the three point line. Despite only scoring 18 points in the first half, MCC held strong on the defensive end allowing just 33 points to the high powered Sheridan offense that torched the Pioneers for 96 points the last time the two teams played.

Coming out of the locker room at the half, MCC was facing a 15 point deficit and put the foot on the gas pedal to start chipping away. MCC got away from the three point line in the second half and began to work the ball into the low post. Nelson, who finished with 23 points, utilized some pick and roll from the top of the key to find his way to the basket. When Sheridan adjusted to stop Nelson, Mbang found the holes between the defense which led to easy layups for the big man. Mbang would finish with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

Coming to the closing seconds, MCC’s Montenia Nelson hit a three point shot from the top of the key to put MCC up 71-70 with under 15 seconds to play. Sheridan’s Channel Banks had the ball stripped, but came up with the loose ball at the baseline and found Ladan Ricketts on the three point line who sank a dagger at the buzzer as Sheridan pulled off the 73-71 win.

Next up for the ‘Neers:

MCC is back at home to take on Northwest College on Wednesday Night. The game day sponsor, Holy Rosary Health Care, will host its annual MCC Pink Night for Wednesday’s game. The Pioneers will look to bounce back after the questionable loss to Sheridan on Saturday. MCC is currently in the bottom half of the north sub region, but with four games left in Region IX play, MCC can build up some momentum leading into the Region IX playoff games.
