Box Score

(Miles City, MT) The Miles Community College Pioneers took on Central Wyoming College Saturday night in Miles City, MT.

The Pioneers came into Saturday’s contest at 2-5 in Region IX play but took on a CWC team that came in at 2-9 in conference play. With home court advantage and some momentum after a strong second half showing against Western Wyoming, MCC was looking to pick up their 3rd Region IX win of the year.

MCC jumped out to a big lead after a 12-4 run through the middle minutes of the first quarter. Leading Scorer Tia Torio hit a three point shot to start the run and capped the lopsided minutes stretch with another three point shot to put the Pioneers up eight with three minutes to play in the first quarter.

MCC lost focus to finish off the first quarter as the Rustlers answered with a run of their own, stringing together 9 points in the final 2:26 of the quarter to put themselves up by two heading into the second quarter of play.

The second quarter was much of the same in the first as MCC put together another strong offensive push outscoring CWC 13-11. Central Wyoming extended the lead to six after an Amanda Mitchell layup, but MCC’s Kyra Fleharty answered the call. With three consecutive baskets, including a three point play, Fleharty put the Lady Pioneers back ahead with 2:37 left in the period. Jennifer Burnham would cap the run with a three point play of her own to put the pioneers up by 5 heading into the closing seconds.

Central Wyoming turned on the jets to close out the second quarter as Amanda Mitchell hit another uncontested layup to bring the lead to three and a Loveeda White triple at the buzzer tied the game at 30 apiece.

To start the third quarter, MCC jumped to a seven point lead but a couple lapses on defense allowed CWC to tie the game up at 37. Torio found her form and buried two deep three point shots that forced a CWC time out. The time out didn’t phase Torio as picked up a steal on the next possession that translated to two free throws on the offensive end. Kyra Fleharty followed up Torio’s offensive showing and went on to score the final five points of the 3rd quarter for the Lady Pioneers.

CWC’s Loveeda White kept the game close with two more three point shots with less than two minutes to go in the third. Along with a Myriah Fauber 15-footer, the lead was cut to six heading into the last ten minutes of play.

MCC stepped on the gas pedal in the fourth quarter. Savannah Weidauer scored eight of her xx points in the final five minutes of play and MCC coasted through the final two minutes to a 69-55 victory.

Tia Torio led the game in scoring with 23 points, while Fleharty and Weidauer each recorded a double-double with 16 points, 11 rebounds and 14 points, 10 rebounds, respectively.
