Banged Up Pioneers Struggle Against #14 Gillette

Box Score

(Miles City, MT) The Miles Community College Pioneers took on the Gillette College Pronghorns on Wednesday night at Kailey Gymnasium.

The Pioneers are coming into the matchup with the 14th ranked Pronghorns after four straight Region IX losses. The Pronghorns are sitting at the top of the North Subregion heading into Wednesday night’s Game.

The Pioneers, with an upset on their home court in mind, played tough defensively against the high-powered Gillette Pronghorns. Allowing just 10 points in the first seven minutes, the Pioneers were within five points approaching the halfway point of the first half.

Offensively, Gillette held strong on their end of the court not allowing a field goal until Ugiljesa Portic hit a layup with 14 minutes left in the half. After the layup closed the gap to five points, that was as close as Miles would come for the rest of the game. Gillette would rattle off 10 straight points and would finish the half and head into the locker room with a 45-20 lead.

The second half didn’t show much change. The Pioneers were without leading scorer Montenia Nelson, who has done most of the legwork on the offensive end this season. Nelson went down in the first half with an ankle injury and he would not return in the second half. Nelson finished with just two points.

Gillette would pick up where they left off in the first half and avoid any chance of an upset on Wednesday as they cruised to the 90-56 win.

Kameron Rauch led the Pioneers in scoring with 13 points on the night.
