First Half Troubles Plague the Pioneers

Box Score

(Powell, WY) The Pioneers traveled to Powell, WY to take on the Northwest College Trappers in a Region IX conference game.

MCC (7-11, 0-3) went into Saturday’s matchup with the Trappers (13-6, 1-2) coming off four straight losses.

The Pioneers came out of the locker room on Saturday determined for a win, but Northwest College was determined to thwart any upset ideas MCC had.

The Pioneers got off to a rocky start shooting under 30% in the first half scoring while the Trappers, on their home floor, set off on a blistering pace outscoring MCC 42-27. MCC couldn’t get a shot to fall and NWC was scoring at will in the first 20 minutes of play.

The second half was a much different story offensively for the Pioneers as they went on to score 46 points, thanks in part to a 29 point game from the team’s leading scorer Montenia Nelson. Kameron Rauch, Deng Kuany, and Adoum Mbang also finished the game with double digits in the points column.

Despite the offensive showing from MCC in the second half, the first half deficit was too much to overcome. The big men down low for the Trappers matched MCC bucket for bucket in the second half while also outrebounded the Pioneers 43-27 on the game. NWC came away with the 88-73 victory.

The Pioneers have struggled to put a full game together but have shown signs of great play this year. Head coach Chase Tait is confident that when his team can put a full 40 minutes together, they can compete with any team in the conference. The loss brings MCC to 7-12 on the season and 0-4 in Region IX, but with two months left in the season, there is plenty of time to make a jump up the conference leader board for the Pioneers.

Next up for the ‘Neers:

MCC takes on conference favorite, Gillette College, on Wednesday night in Miles City. The Pioneers will look for their first conference win of the year while defending their home court against a talented Pronghorn team.
