Box Score

(Miles City, MT) The Miles Community Lady Pioneers took on the Sheridan Lady Generals Wednesday night in what was MCC’s first Region IX home game this season.

Miles Community College (10-7, 1-1) came into Wednesday’s contest coming off a Region IX win against Central Wyoming College last weekend in Riverton, WY. The Lady Generals (13-5, 0-2) head into Wednesday’s game still looking for their first conference victory.

MCC hit the court on Wednesday night determined to defend their home floor against visiting Sheridan College. They came out hot in the first quarter shooting an impressive 43% from the floor in the first 10 minutes of play. MCC went on to outscore Sheridan College 17-8 in the first quarter thanks in part to a nine point swing from sophomore Lacey Waid. Coming off the bench, Waid came in and made an immediate impact, sinking three point shots on back-to-back possessions after stepping onto the floor. She capped off her scoring surge in the 1st quarter with an old-fashioned 3-point play to give the Lady Pioneers a nine point lead heading into the 2nd quarter.

The Lady Pioneers kept their foot on the gas pedal throughout the 2nd quarter through some good post play by sophomore Savanah Weidauer and freshman Kyra Fleharty. The two combined for 12 2nd quarter points in the paint and kept Sheridan’s leading scorer, Ashlie Blackburn, to just five points in the first half. Sheridan answered the call with an offensive surge of their own, more than doubling their 1st quarter total. Despite Sheridan’s efforts, the Lady Pioneers made their way into the locker room with a 39-27 lead.

Without skipping a beat, MCC continued their dominance on both ends of the floor in the second half. Sophomores Tia Torio and Emily Bergum found their footing behind the arc, each hitting a pair of triples combing for 4 of 7 shooting from the 3-point line in the second half.

Sheridan College tried to answer but some solid defense from the Lady Pioneers, especially that of Fleharty and Torio (combined nine steals in the game), was able to halt any run that the Lady Generals had in mind. MCC combined to force 19 total turnovers in the game.

The Lady Pioneers went on to outscore the Lady Generals in the 3rd quarter 16-13 and with a 15 point lead heading into the 4th quarter, MCC coasted to the 70-55 victory.

Next up for the Lady ‘Neers:

With the win Wednesday, MCC improves to 11-7 on the season and 2-1 in Region IX. With back-to-back conference wins, the Lady Pioneers are picking up steam as they head to Powell, WY this weekend. They will take on the Northwest College Lady Trappers on Saturday afternoon. The games will be streamed live and will be view able through the schedule tab under women’s basketball at www.mccpioneers.com.
