Lady Pioneers Split First Region IX Games in WY

(Miles City, MT) Miles Community College Lady Pioneer basketball team hit the road last weekend for a pair of Region IX games against Western Wyoming and Central Wyoming.

Game 1 MCC 56 vs WWCC 75

The Lady Pioneers (9-6 overall) opened up their Region IX schedule in Rock Springs, WY with a matchup against conference powerhouse Western Wyoming Community College.

The Lady Pioneers played tough in the first half behind some tremendous play by sophomores Lacey Waid and Tia Torio. MCC trailed by two in the first quarter, but matched WWCC bucket for bucket in the second quarter and would head into the locker room trailing by two points.

The Pioneers went cold in the second half, and WWCC came out and showed their true form.

“Western Wyoming is good,” said head coach Liz Lewis. They showed their dominance on both ends of the floor in the 3rd quarter outscoring the Pioneers 34-7 and taking a commanding 29 point lead into the final ten minutes of play. WWCC’s Shayla Simpson and Ozge Yarga turned it on from behind the arc in the second half shooting a combined 5 for 6 from beyond the arc. Each scored 17 points and 15 points in the game, respectively.

MCC showed signs of greatness in the 4th quarter forcing six turnovers on the defensive end of the court and outscoring WWCC 21-11. The 3rd quarter hole proved to be too large for the Lady Pioneers to dig themselves out of, as they would go on to drop their conference opener 75-56.

The Lady Pioneers drop to 9-7 on the year and 0-1 in Region IX play. WWCC improved to 12-4 on the year and remains unbeaten in Region IX play.

Game 2 MCC 96 vs CWC 80 (no first half stats available)

Entering Saturday’s contest after dropping the first game of the road trip, the Lady Pioneers were looking to bounce back and even up their conference record.

Taking on Central Wyoming (4-10 overall, 0-1 Region IX) in Riverton, MCC would have their hands full in their second conference road game of the year.

MCC was in full offensive form on Saturday afternoon and they did just enough on the defensive end of the floor to keep the Lady Rustler shooters at bay.

MCC’s Savannah Weidauer along with Sophomore point guard Tia Torio combined for 44 points for the Lady Pioneers. Weidauer would shoot 10 for 12 from the floor and would add in four free throws to bring her point tally to 24. Torio led the guard play of MCC with 9 assists and 20 points, 12 of which came from behind the arc. MCC freshman Colleen Katoa and Kyra Fleharty would also land in double digits for the Lady Pioneers.

Defensively, the Lady Pioneers forced 14 turnovers and outrebounded CWC 39-33 throughout the game. CWC still managed to score 80 points, but it wasn’t enough to match MCC.

The Lady Pioneers (10-7 overall, 1-1 Region IX) went on to pick up their first Region IX win of the season, 96-80.

Next up for the Lady ‘Neers:

MCC takes on Sheridan College on Wednesday, January 18th in Miles City, MT. MCC will look to improve their conference record with win on their home court against a talented Sheridan College Lady Generals team. Tip-off on Wednesday night will be at 5:30.
