Pioneers Fall to Buccaneers, Head to Holiday Break

Box Score

(Miles City, MT) The Miles Community College Pioneers took on the Dawson Buccaneers on Friday night in an in-state nonconference matchup that took place at Kailey Gymnasium.

The Pioneers enter the contest with a 7-6 record and were looking to build some momentum into the holiday break. They took on a tough Dawson CC basketball team and had their hands full on Friday Night. MCC would be without the services of freshman forward Deng Kuany and Freshman guard Gavin Gundlach, who is sidelined with a season ending back injury.

The Bucs came out hot in the first halt. Shooting 47% (17 for 36, 7 for 16 3-pt) in the first half, DCC was shooting at will over the top of the MCC zone. Ryan Strong and Daniel Shedden combined for six first half triples that lead to a 46 point half for the Bucs.

MCC couldn’t muster much offense and had a scary moment late in the first twenty minutes of play. Sophomore guard Montenia Nelson, who entered the game 5th in the nation in scoring with 25.5 PPG, hit the floor hard and came up slow. An apparent wrist injury to his shooting hand would have him sidelined the rest of the game. Absent Nelson and Kuany, the Pioneers struggled to find the basket in the first half. Scoring just 32 first half points on 12 for 29 (41%) shooting, MCC made their way into the locker room trailing 46-32.

MCC came out of the locker room and put some halftime adjustments to work. Perion Little and Adoum Mbang got in a groove and the Pioneers started clawing at the 14 point deficit. Little, who was covering the point with Nelson sidelined, kept the Pioneers in sync early in the first half and cut the lead to within four.

Dawson converted on some late Pioneer turnovers that ended up being the downfall for MCC on the night. 26 turnovers, 15 of which came in the second half, lead to 15 points for the Bucs and they would hold on for the 78-71 victory.

Perion Little and Adoum Mbang would lead the scoring charge for the Pioneers with 18 points and 21 points, respectively. Mbang would also snag a game high 11 rebounds notching his 3rd double-double of the season. Daniel Shedden of Dawson scored a game high 22 points.
