Lady Pioneers Down Bucs

Box Score

(Miles City, MT) The Miles Community College Lady Pioneers took on the Dawson Community College Buccaneers on Friday night at Kailey Gymnasium.

The Lady Pioneers head into the in-state rivalry game at 7-6 and will play their last nonconference game before heading into the holiday break. The Pioneers haven’t lost at home against the Bucs in the tenure of head coach Liz Lewis. They would look to keep it that way on Friday night.

In a roller coaster contest for the Lady Pioneers, one full of lows and highs, the Lady Pioneers were able to come out with the 63-57 victory.

The first half was an offensive struggle for MCC as they could only muster 24 points. Some tough shooting for the Lady Pioneers was a product of a stingy Lady Buc defense. Shooting just 33% (10 for 30, 1 for 11 3-pt) from the field in the first half, the MCC shooters couldn’t find their footing.

Dawson took advantage, as they went on to possess the ball for a majority of the first half. Some good shooting by sophomore Rachael Ault from the perimeter and some low post play by Brooke Jones led to a 33-24 lead heading into the locker room.

MCC fought themselves out of the freezer in the second half and got their offense going. Sophomore standout Tia Torio was a staple for the offensive surge by MCC. With Torio driving into the lanes, the floor opened up for freshman Kyra Fleharty and Colleen Katoa. MCC poured on the points outscoring DCC 20-6 in the third quarter.

The teams traded baskets in the fourth quarter and neither team could put together a run of more than five points. Torio and Katoa hit a pair of late triples for the Pioneers that extended the lead to 6 and it would remain there as time expired.

The third quarter offensive surge from MCC proved to be too much for DCC as the Pioneers remain unbeaten against Dawson on their home floor under direction from head coach Liz Lewis.

Next up for the ‘Neers:

MCC heads into the holiday break with an 8-6 record. They will return to take on Williston State College. The Pioneers have won the previous two meetings with WSC, including a double OT thriller in Miles City back in November. The Pioneers play their last set of nonconference games before opening up Region IX play against Western and Central Wyoming.
