Lady Pioneers go 1-2 on the Weekend

(McCook, NE) The Miles Community College Lady Pioneers hit the road to McCook, Nebraska for a 3 game set with Western Wyoming, McCook College, and Northwest Technical College.

Game 1 MCC vs. Western Wyoming:

The Lady Pioneers came up short on the opening game of the weekend falling to Western Wyoming 57-49. Despite some great play from Savannah Weidauer and Tia Torio who, each bucketed 12 points, it wasn’t enough to outlast the stellar guard play from WWC. The Lady Pioneers held tight late in the 4th quarter but Western Wyoming was able to calm the nerves and cash in on their trips to the free throw line to ice the game.

Game 2 MCC vs. McCook

The Lady Pioneers found their form in game 2, outlasting McCook College 72-69. The storyline for game 2 could be simplified by one word, offense. With 7 combined player with double digits in the points column, both teams were firing on all cylinders on the offensive end of the floor. The backcourt play from Tia Torio early in the game opened up the low post for Savannah Weidauer late in the game. With a great three point shooting night for Torio (3-5) and a perfect night at the free throw line (5-5) she went on to score a game high 22 points. In the low post, Weidauer would go for the double-double, shooting 7 for 10 for 16 points of her own along with 10 rebounds. Despite being outrebounded, the Lady Pioneers won the turnover battle and made enough free throws down the stretch to clinch the game and even their record on the weekend.

Game 3 MCC vs. Northwest Tech

The offensive surge from Northwest was too much for the Lady Pioneers in weekend finale as they would go on to drop game 3 94-54. With four players from northwest going for double digits, and their leading scorer dropping 30 points, MCC was outmatched on both ends of the floor. Northwest led in almost every statistical category across the board. The Lady Pioneers shot just 37% from the field and couldn’t keep up with the high powered Northwest Tech. Leading the scoring for the Lady Pioneers was Savannah Weidauer and Lacey Waid with 14 points and 12 points, respectively.

After a 1-2 record on the road trip, The Lady Pioneers record falls to 2-3. MCC will take on Lake Region State and Williston State College on Friday and Saturday in the second home tournament of the year.

Coach Lewis on the weekend and the team's identity:

“Overall this weekend was a great experience for our young team. It is tough to play three games back to back to back at the college level. We are very young and inexperienced, and I believe this weekend helped our leaders gain some of the experience they will need for us to be successful this year. Our team is heading in the right direction. With time and experience, we will improve throughout the season. Our leaders need to learn to lead through the challenges and the adversity that we will face this year. We have some tough games coming up and we play some great teams, nationally ranked teams. Our focus is to continue to play as a team and learn from every opportunity.”
