Men's and Women's Golf Battle in Argo Invite

Smith Aces #6

(Great Falls, MT) The Men's and Women's Pioneers Golf teams took to the links on Monday and Tuesday in the University of Great Falls Argonaut Invitational.

Jaxson Archibald and Caleb Bates came out firing on day one racking up 16 pars and 2 birdies between the pair on their way to shooting an 86 and 81, respectively. Caleb Bates picked up where he left off after a great showing in the Oredigger Invitational birdieing two of his first three holes at Meadowlark CC. With a string of 7 consecutive pars on the back nine he would fire an inward score of 2-over 38. Jaxson Archibald held strong through the front nine outside of a mishap on the tough par 3 4th shooting a 5-over 41.

The back 18 of Day 1 was a similar story as the first 18 holes with Bates and Archibald leading the way for the Pioneers. Bates made two birdies including one on the par three 12th after throwing a dart to inside of 10 feet. He would go on to finish his round with a 6-over 78 gaining some momentum going into moving day. Archibald played an impressive second round but couldn't avoid the big numbers on the par 4 5th and par 3 6th. He would fire an 8-over par 80 that was highlighted by a long putt on the 9th for birdie.

Day 2 of the tournament was tough on the Pioneers as the wind would pick up and make playing conditions considerably tougher. That didn't stop Bates from firing his second sub-80 round of the tournament. Chayton Petersen also fire the best round of his collegiate career. Aside from Bates and Petersen, the day was highlighted by an outstanding swing from KC Smith, a swing that lead to an ace on the 210 yard par 3 6th. With the pin tucked on the right side of the green and an intimidating pond in front, Smith made what was probably the best shot of the tournament. He would eventually post a final round 83 which would be his lowest of the contest.

KC Smith on his hole in one:

"The pin was in the back and it was playing downwind. I had a 5 iron and knew that I hit it well. Even one of my playing partners said that it was on line to go in. I didn't think much of it until I heard Coach Tait react on the back of tee box. It was a long day and tournament altogether so I didn't react with a ton of enthusiasm but it was still a great feeling to make an ace in a college tournament."

The Men's team would go on to finish 7th overall in the tournament.

For the Lady Pioneers, Riley Shipp shot her season best score on day 2 of the tournament.

Head Coach Chase Tait is optimistic about the direction of team as they improved drastically from the first tournament to the second. "Each day we are getting better, there is still plenty of work to be done but we are taking steps forward every day."

Next up for the Pioneers is the Rocky Mountain Battlin' Bears Invitational.
