Pioneers Hit the Links in the Oredigger Invite

(Butte, MT) The Miles Community College Men's and Women's Golf teams played their first tournament of the year at the Montana Tech Oredigger Invitational.

Bad weather and tough golf course conditions were the story for the Pioneers on Monday and Tuesday. That didn't stop Caleb Bates from putting on an impressive showing in his first career collegiate event. A collegiate event that boasted a tremendous lineup of talent, including perennial Frontier Conference powerhouses Lewis-Clark State College and Rocky Mountain College.

Day 1

Opening with a first round 76, highlighted by a birdie at the 11th and a back nine score of +1, Caleb held strong in the windy conditions at an already tough Butte Country Club in Butte, MT. Continuing his 36 hole day in the afternoon, Caleb caught fire carding four birdies and posting a day 1 score of 149 and a clubhouse position of T7 going into day 2. Jaxson Archibald would also go low in his second round posting a 72 but after a tough opening round, was outside of the top ten going into the final round of the tournament.

Day 2

In the final day of the tournament, Bates would open his round with a triple bogey tough par 4 5th. Although the rocky start wasn't what he was looking for, the freshman would grind out a round of 10-over par, 80. Putting him in a tie for 12th place finishing his tournament with a final score of 229 (76,73,80). Archibald would throw together an impressive back nine stringing together 9 pars, but a tough front nine would lead to a final round 83 putting Jaxson in a tie for 33rd place. Bailey Bice would finish in 37th for the Lady Pioneers.

As a team the Miles Community College would finish in 8th place finishing with a 4-man 54 hole score of 996. Taking the team overall contest was Lewis-Clark State College, planting 3 of their 5 golfers into the top ten finishing with a team score of 873. The Carroll College Saints would post 893, putting them in the runner up position for the invitational. Sean Benson (Montana Tech) would best Chris Lien (LC State) in the second playoff hole to take the tournament title.

Next up for the Pioneer Golfers is the U of Great Falls Argo Invitational on the 26th and 27th of September.
