Lady P's fall to McCook

(Gillette, WY) The Lady Pioneers traveled to Gillette, WY, to compete in the Region IX Tournament, on Tuesday March 1st. The Lady P’s were going into the tournament as a 7 seed from the north region, and they were set to take on the 2 seed from the south region, which was McCook Community College. In their last 4 regular season games, the Pioneers went 2-2. The mindset of the Lady P’s was getting past McCook, and putting them in a good position to make a run in the tournament.

In the 1st quarter the tempo of the game was set between the Lady P’s and the Lady Indians, as neither team would give ground. In the 2nd quarter the Lady Pioneers found themselves trailing by 11, after 2 of their starters got into foul trouble. With 5 minutes left, MCC made a comeback, and took the lead. Going into halftime MCC was leading with a score of 31-30. In the 1st half the Lady P’s shot 34.5% from the field, and 12.5% from 3-pt range. In the 2nd half the Lady P’s struggled to match the scoring of the Lady Indians. In the 4th quarter MCC was trailing by 7 and they came down and hit a big 3-pt shot to cut the lead to 4. However, on the very next possession they allowed McCook to make a 3 and expanded the lead back to 7. With 2 minutes left in the game, MCC was still trailing by 8 and decided to not foul the Lady Indians. The Pioneers did what they could to battle their way back into the game, but couldn’t get enough offense going to make a comeback. The final score of the game was 67-59, with the Lady P’s on the losing end.

The Lady Pioneers were led in scoring by Sophomore Theresa Mac-Dangosu. Mac-Dangosu scored 22 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field and she made 12-of-15 from the charity stripe. Savannah Weidauer put up 9 points, as she made 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Makiya Givens added 8 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field and she grabbed 3 steals. Lacey Waid scored 8 points on 3-of-9 shooting from the field.

The Lady Pioneers ended their season (12-19) overall and (4-10) in conference play. MCC finished 7th in the nation in Defensive Rebounds per Game (31.9), and 6th in the nation in Total Rebounds per Game (48.5).
