Lady P's fall to Casper

(Casper, WY) The Lady Pioneers traveled to Casper, WY, on Wednesday for a midweek showdown against the Lady Thunderbirds of Casper College. This was the second meeting between MCC and CC, in the first meeting the Lady P’s fell to the Lady T-birds 83-69.

In the 1st quarter the Lady P’s got off to a very slow start as, only scoring 2 points in the first 8 minutes of the quarter. The Pioneers didn’t get their second bucket in until the 1:25 mark in the first quarter. The score at the end of the quarter was 23-4. The Lady P’s opened the second quarter on a 9-5 run, as the score with 7:07 left in the quarter was 26-13. In the next 5 minutes of the quarter MCC continued to battle and managed to cut the lead to 11 with a 1:52 left in the half. The score at halftime was 36-21 with the Lady Pioneers trailing. Miles outscored Casper 17-13 in the 2nd quarter. The Lady P’s started off the 3rd quarter strong as they went on a 9-3 run, and cut the lead to single digits for the first time since the first quarter. In the next two minutes of play MCC allowed the Lady T-birds to go on an 11-3 run, as the was 50-33 with 4:09 left in the 3rd quarter. The Pioneers continued to struggle to stop the T-birds from scoring and the score going into the 4th quarter was 62-40. The Lady P’s started off their third consecutive quarter off strong in the 4th, as they went on a 10-2 run. With 7:59 left in the final quarter the score was 64-50 with the Lady Pioneers trailing. In the next 5 minutes of the quarter both teams continued to score back and forth, as neither team allowed the other to gain any ground. With 3:07 left in the game the Lady P’s were trailing 74-59. The Pioneers couldn’t seem to get enough going to get back into the game, and the final score was 79-62. The Lady P’s shot 29% from the field on the game, and just 25% from 3-pt range.

The Lady P’s had 3-of-5 starters score in double digit figures. Sophomore Point guard, Kayla Torio, led the team scoring 13 points on 3-of-7 shooting from 3-pt range, and she grabbed 8 rebounds. Makiya Givens put up 12 points, as she went 4-4 from the charity stripe, she grabbed 6 rebounds, and she had 5 steals in the game. Shelby Holmes added 11 points on 4-of-14 shooting from the field.

The Lady Pioneers are now (11-18) on the season, and (3-10) in conference play. MCC will travel to Crow Agency, MT on Saturday Feb. 20th for the final regular season game to take on Little Big Horn College.
