Lady P's beat Dawson

(Miles City, MT) On Saturday, February 13, 2016, the Lady Pioneers hosted the Lady Pronghorns of Gillette College. The Lady Pioneers have dropped a pair of tough games previous to this matchup, and they were looking to get back in the win column. In their last meeting the Pioneers fell to Gillette 61-51, and the Lady P’s were looking at getting even with the Lady Pronghorns.

In the 1st quarter the Lady Pioneers got off to a fast start as they opened the game on a 12-4 run. With 4:31 left in the quarter MCC was up 16-10, however they allowed the Pronghorns to end the quarter on an 8-0 run, as the score at the end of the first quarter was 18-16. The 2nd quarter was a bit of a stalemate, as neither team would allow the other to gain any ground on the scoreboard. After trailing by 6 the Lady P’s managed to cut that lead to 1 with 3:15 left on the clock. The score going into halftime was 28-25 with MCC trailing. In the 3rd quarter the Pioneers regained the lead at the 6:02 mark on a made field goal by Makiya Givens. The score was 37-36. The Pioneers continued to trade baskets with the Pronghorns and with 2:34 left in the quarter the Lady P’s were on top 40-38. MCC finished the 3rd quarter on a 4-0 run. The 3rd quarter was all MCC as they outscored GC 19-10. In the final quarter the game was tight, with 4:50 left in the game the score was 50-49. In the next 3 minutes the Lady P’s allowed the Lady Pronghorns to go on a 10-3 run, and found themselves trailing 59-53, with 1:41 left in the game. The Lady Pioneers cut the lead to 4 with: 07 seconds left in the game, and they couldn’t finish the comeback. MCC was outscored 27-16 in the 4th quarter. The final score was 65-60, with the Pioneers dropping the game to the Pronghorns.

The Lady P’s had two players carry the scoring load on Saturday, Chelsey Borden and Kayla Torio. Borden, led the Pioneers with 22 points on (10-of-16) shooting from the charity stripe, and she also grabbed 7 boards and had 4 assists. Torio, scored 15 points on (4-of-6) shooting from 3-pt. range.

The Lady P’s are now (10-17) overall on the season, and (3-9) in conference play. The Lady P’s will travel to Glendive to take on the DCC Buccaneers.

(Glendive, MT) On Monday evening, the Lady P’s traveled Glendive, MT to take on the Lady Buccaneers of Dawson Community College. This would be the second meeting between the two teams. In their last meeting the Pioneers came out on top with a score of 62-57. MCC was looking to continue its success against DCC, and get a much needed win.

In the 1st quarter the Lady P’s got off to a great start, as they seemed to be able to score at will. The Lady P’s played a strong full-court press defense against the Lady Buccaneers and managed to hold them to 12 points in the first quarter. The score after the first quarter was 20-12 with the Lady P’s on top. The 2nd quarter was a very similar outcome as the Lady P’s continued to make basket after basket. MCC outscored DCC in the second quarter 19-12, as the score going into halftime was 39-24. After halftime, the Pioneers scoring slowed down, however their defense was still very impressive as they held the Lady Buccaneers to a game low 10 points in the 3rd quarter. The Lady P’s outscored Dawson 13-10 in the 3rd quarter. In the final quarter of the game all defense went out the door for both teams, as both teams traded made field goals back and forth. Both the Lady P’s and Lady Bucs managed to have a high scoring quarter, as MCC was outscored in the quarter 24-21. However, the final score of the game was 73-58, with the Lady Pioneers coming out on top. The Lady P’s shot 42.9% from the field on Monday night, and they dominated the rebound contest 54-34.

The Lady P’s had four girls score in double-digit figures. Savannah Weidauer led MCC with 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field and she grabbed 9 rebounds. Makiya Givens put up 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field, and she grabbed 5 boards and had 2 steals. Theresa Mac-Dangosu added 11 points and grabbed 7 boards for the Lady P’s. Kayla Torio scored 11 points on 3-of-6 shooting from 3-pt range, and she grabbed 7 rebounds for MCC.

The Lady Pioneers are now (11-17) on the season, and (3-9) in conference play. MCC will travel to Casper College to take on a tough Lady T-birds team on Wednesday, Feb. 17th.
