Lady P's hang on late against Northwest College

(Miles City, MT) On Saturday the Lady Pioneers hosted the Lady Trappers from Northwest College. The Lady P’s were coming off of two straight losses, and they were looking to end the skid. In years past the Pioneers have had their problems with the Lady Trappers, as they are 1-3 in their last 4 meetings. However, this Lady Pioneers team has a high ceiling and they tend to play better at home.

In the 1st quarter, the Lady P’s found themselves trailing by 6 points, with 2:42 left in the quarter. The score was 17-11, but from that point MCC caught some fire and finished the quarter on an 8-0 run, as they took the lead with a score of 19-17. The 2nd quarter was back in forth scoring between the Lady P’s and the Lady Trappers. Miles had the biggest lead of the quarter with 5 points at one, however Northwest College managed to get ahead with a lead of 33-29. There were 4 different times were the score was tied. In the final minute of the half the Lady Pioneers finished the quarter on a 4-0 run and tied the game on a buzzer beater by Savannah Weidauer. The score at the half was 33-33. The 3rd quarter was the same story between the two teams as they would continue to trade off bucket after bucket, and neither team would give ground. The Lady P’s managed to take their first lead of the 3rd quarter at the 5:17 mark on a made field goal by Makiya Givens, with a score of 46-45. The Pioneers finished off the quarter strong, as the score was 57-51. The 3rd quarter was largest scoring differential between MCC and NWC, with the Pioneers on top 24-18. The Lady P’s opened the final quarter slow, as they saw their 8 point lead cut in half, with 7:35 left in the quarter. The game continued to be neck and neck, however even though the Lady Pioneers allowed the game to get close they never lost the lead in the 4th quarter. The final score of the game was 79-73 with the Pioneers on top. The Lady P’s had another good shooting night as they shot 43.3% from the field and shot 34.9% from 3-pt. range. The Pioneers also won several team categories such as Assists (17-10), Points in the Paint (40-36), and Bench Points (25-6).

The Lady Pioneers had 5 girls who scored in double-digit figures. Theresa Mac-Dangosu led the team with 16 points, on 7-of-14 shooting from the field. Mac Dangosu also grabbed 8 boards for MCC. Shelby Holmes added 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting from 3-pt range. Makiya Givens put up 10 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, and dished out 6 assists. Chelsey Borden scored 10 points on 2-of-4 shooting from behind the arch. Savannah Weidauer put up a double-double for the Lady P’s. Weidauer scored 10 points, and she snagged 10 rebounds.

With the win the Lady P’s are now (9-10) overall and (2-1) in conference play. The Lady Pioneers will travel to Gillette, Wyoming, on Wednesday January 20th to battle against the Lady Pronghorns.
