Pioneers edged by Central Wyoming

(Miles City, MT) The Lady Pioneers continued their 3 games of play at home this Saturday, as they took on the Central Wyoming Lady Rustlers. The Lady P’s were coming off of a big conference win the game before, and they were looking to start off (2-0) in conference play with a win over the Rustlers. The Lady P’s were also coming off one of the best shooting nights of the season from the 3-pt. range, as they shot an impressive 50% from deep.

The 1st quarter was tight as both teams battled back and forth, at the 6:09 mark the score was 7-6 with the Pioneers trailing, and the Rustlers had gone on an 8-0 in the next 3 minutes of play. In the final minutes of the quarter the Lady P’s found themselves trailing by 7, however they managed to chip away at the lead and cut it to 3, as they score at the end of the 1st was 15-12. The 2nd quarter was all Lady P’s, as they went on a 10-2 run to take a five point lead midway through the 2nd quarter. At halftime the score was 26-23 with the Lady P’s on top, however you got a feeling that this game was going to be a hard fought battle that went down to the last second. The beginning of the 3rd quarter was a stalemate neither team gaining ground on the other, but in the last 3 minutes the Lady P’s extended their lead to 35-30, however Central Wyoming took the lead in their next two possessions with back to back 3-pt makes. The Pioneers gave up an 8-0 run to lose their lead. At the end of the quarter the Pioneers trailed 40-37. Early in the 4th quarter the Lady Pioneers managed to take the lead back for a moment, as they started the quarter on a 6-2 run. The 4th had 5 lead changes, and the Lady P’s were trailing 53-50 with 23 seconds left in the game. The Pioneers had two opportunities to tie the game, but couldn’t get a bucket to fall. The final score of the game was 53-50.

The leading scorers for the Lady P’s were Theresa Mac-Dangosu and Savannah Weidauer. Mac-Dangosu led the way with a double-double, as she scored 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field, she grabbed 15 rebounds, and also had 4 steals for the Lady P’s. Weidauer added 10 points and grabbed 7 boards for the Pioneers.

The difference makers in the game were the Pioneers shooting from beyond the arch, and their shooting from the charity stripe. The Pioneers went (0-11) from 3-pt range, and they shot just 50% from the free throw line going (6-12). The dominated several aspects of the game, such as Rebounds (48-37), Points in the Paint (42-28), and Bench Points (23-4).

The Pioneers drop to (8-9) overall on the season, and (1-1) in conference play. The Lady P’s will travel to Sheridan, WY, on Wednesday, to play against Sheridan Community College.
