Lady Pioneers smash Western Wyoming

(Miles City, MT) On Thursday night the Lady Pioneers started off their Region 9 competition, as they hosted the Lady Mustangs of Western Wyoming Community College. This was the first of two meetings between the two teams. The Lady P’s were coming off a tough loss on Monday, and they were looking to make the Region take notice that the Lady Pioneers are someone to be worried about.

In the 1st quarter, the Lady P’s got off to a great start as they outscored the Lady Mustangs 21-11. In the last 2 minutes of the 1st quarter MCC went on an 11-1 run that allowed them to expand their lead. The second quarter was a battle between the two teams, as Miles allowed Western Wyoming to get within 4 points at the 4 minute mark. In the last 4 minutes of the 2nd quarter the Lady Pioneers went on a 10-2 run to end the half. The score at half time was 36-24 with MCC leading. In the 3rd quarter, the Lady P’s came out with a bang as they outscored the Mustangs 15-3. Going into the 4th quarter the Pioneers led 51-27, and midway through the period the Lady P’s reached their largest lead of 62-30. The final score was 71-47 with the Lady P’s on top. The 47 points was the least amount of points that the Lady Pioneers have allowed in a game. The Pioneers had a dominant night in the paint as they outscored the Mustangs 22-8. The Lady P’s also won the battle in Rebounds (56-54), Bench Points (28-17), and Points off of Turnovers (11-5). MCC had one of their best shooting nights from the 3-pt range, as they shot 50% (9-18).

The Lady Pioneers had three girls who carried the scoring load on Thursday night, Shelby Holmes, Chesley Borden, and Tia Torio. Sophomore Guard Shelby Holmes, scored 18 pts on 5-of-9 shooting from 3-pt range, and she also snagged 7 rebounds. Borden also put up 18 pts as she went 9-of-10 from the charity stripe. Borden also dished out 6 assists and had 6 steals. Freshman Guard, Torio added 12 pts on 4-of-6 shooting on the night.

With the win the Lady Pioneers are now (8-8) overall on the year and (1-0) in conference play. MCC will host Central Wyoming Community College on Saturday, Jan. 9th. Tip-off is set for 2pm. Come out and support MCC Basketball.
