Lady P's edged by Williston

(Miles City, MT) On Monday evening, the Lady Pioneers hosted their first of three home games this week against the Williston State College Tetons. The Lady P’s have beaten the Lady Tetons in their last two meetings this the season, and they were looking to continue their success against the Tetons this season. The Pioneers had just returned from a well played tournament in Las Vegas where they played a pair of tough games, which the Lady P’s split. Both teams started the game off slow, as the first two points weren’t scored until 4 minutes into the 1st quarter. The Pioneers hadn’t scored until the 5 minute mark in the 1st quarter. The score at the end of the quarter the score was 16-13 with MCC trailing. The 2nd quarter was the best scoring quarter for the Lady Pioneers as they outscored the Tetons 22-12. MCC grabbed their first lead of the game at the 7:09 mark on a made free throw by Chelsey Borden. There were 7 different lead changes in the 2nd quarter alone, and Miles went into the half leading with a score of 35-28. In the 3rd period the Lady P’s took their biggest lead at the 2:55 mark with a score of 44-36, however after that point they allowed the Tetons to go on a 7-0 run. Early in the 4th the score was tied at 49-49. The Lady P’s hit a cold streak mid-way through the 4th and were trailing 58-51 with 3:26 left in the game. MCC battled its way back into the game late and had an opportunity to tie the game with a shot attempt at the buzzer, but didn’t execute. The Lady P’s fell to Williston State for the first time this season with a final of 61-59.

The Lady P’s were led in scoring by sophomore forward Theresa Mac-Dangosu, as she had 17 pts on the night on 7-of-20 shooting from the field. Mac-Dangosu also grabbed 8 rebounds for MCC. Off of the bench, Chelsey Borden added 14 pts on 5-of-12 shooting from the field. Freshman guard Tia Torio scored 10 pts on 2-of-5 shooting from 3-pt range and also snatched 4 boards.

As a team the Pioneers won the rebounding battle 48-40, they had more points in the paint 28-26, and they had scored more 2nd chance points 8-4. The Lady Pioneers shot 33.8% from the field, but they only shot 26.9% from 3-pt range.

With the loss, the Lady P’s fall to 7-8 on the season. Miles will start Region 9 play on Thursday, Jan. 7th against Western Wyoming. Tip-off is set for 5:30 pm come support Pioneer Basketball.
