Lady P's split in Vegas

(Las Vegas, NV) Over the holidays the Lady Pioneers traveled down to Las Vegas, Nevada to participate in a tournament, and will compete against Utah State University-Eastern on Day 1, and Salt Lake Community College on Day 2. The Lady P’s were coming off of a win the previous week and looked to continue the winning against the USU-Eastern women. In the 1st quarter, MCC started the game off strong as they found themselves ahead up 14-to-8. At the 5:43 mark in the 2nd quarter the Pioneers took their largest lead of the game so far of 24-13, on a made 3-pt. shot by Tia Torio, however from that point USU-Eastern went on a 13-2 run and made that game close at halftime. Coming out of the half the Lady P’s came out of the locker room with a spark, and started the 3rd quarter on a 9-0 run to extend their lead to 39-26. To end the 3rd the Lady Pioneers got hot and extended their lead to 49-31. The 4th quarter was the only quarter that Miles was outscored in the game, which was 22-13, however the Lady P’s held on and came out on top 62-53 and they won their second straight game.

The Pioneers had 3 of their starters who score in double digit margins, Makiya Givens, Theresa Mac-Dangosu, and Tia Torio. Mac-Dangosu led the ladies in scoring as she scored 16 points 5-of-13 shooting from the field. Torio put up 15pts for the Pioneers and she grabbed 7 boards. Givens added on her 2nd double-double of the season, with 12 pts on 2-of-3 shooting from the 3pt line, and she snatched 11 rebounds. Givens also grabbed 4 steals for the Lady P’s.

Miles out dueled the Golden Eagles in several team statistics such as Rebounds (51-to-45), Points off of Turnovers (23-to-20), 2nd chance points (14-to-8), and Fast break Points (16-to-12). The Lady P’s shot 34.4% from the field, they shot 20.7% from 3pt. range, and they shot 61.5% as a team from the charity stripe.

The Pioneers will play against Salt Lake Community College on Day 2 of the tournament. SLCC is the number one ranked team in the nation, so the Lady P’s have a tough match up coming.

(Las Vegas, NV) On Day 2 the Lady Pioneers were ready to take on the women of Salt Lake Community College. MCC was coming off of a pair of wins, and was ready for a tough battle against SLCC. This would be one of the toughest games that the Lady P’s have on the schedule. The Lady P’s started the game off tough as through the 1st quarter the score was tied 11-11. The 2nd quarter was largest scoring differential between the two teams; however the Pioneers were on the wrong end of the scoring. The Lady P’s were outscored 22-to-10 in the second quarter, and going into the half Miles trailed 33-21. Coming out of the half the Lady P’s shots went cold in the locker room as they only scored 8pts in the quarter. Late in the 4th quarter the Lady P’s trailed by 21 pts, and they ended the game with a final of 62-42. The Lady P’s held the Lady Bruins to their 3rd lowest scoring output of their season.

The Pioneers were led in scoring by Sophomore Forward Theresa Mac-Dangosu, as she put up 13pts on 4-of-9 shooting, and she grabbed 8 boards for MCC. Shelby Holmes added 7pts and grabbed 5 rebounds. Makiya Givens put up 6pts on 3-of-8 shooting from the field, and she grabbed 7 boards. Tia Torio scored 6pts and grabbed 6 rebounds for the Lady Pioneers.

The Lady P’s left the Las Vegas tournament with a split on the trip, and they travel back home to host 3 straight games. The Pioneers compete against Williston State College on Monday Jan. 4th. MCC is currently sitting at 7-7 on the season.
